Why am I being asked to authorize my computer with an access code for The Elder Scrolls Online?
The access code feature is there to help ensure account security for our players. Functionally, it detects a few key factors when a player attempts to log into the game, including device id, IP address, and game client version among others. It then compares that information to the previously recognized factor information for the account. Should any of those be different for any reason, an access code will be sent to the user's registered e-mail address to confirm account verification. If you get an Access Code email that you did not request, update your password and ensure that your ESO account is secure.
Keep in mind that some of these factors can change frequently. For example, most people know that an IP address will change should they attempt to log in from work as opposed to logging in from home. What is not so well known is that it is also quite common for internet service providers to routinely change IP addresses for their customers despite the fact that the customer has not moved addresses or changed service in any way.
In general, the access code feature is there to help ensure the security of our players' accounts. Although it can be frustrating to be prompted repeatedly for account verification, we believe that the protection of our players' accounts is worth it.
Important Notes:
- Steam Players: If you have purchased the game through Steam and have not received the email, make sure you are launching the game through Steam directly.
- Content patches/updates may prompt an access code check.
- If you get an access code request that you did not request, we would advise updating your password and securing your ESO account.
